Dear Father— Why have you sent me to Olvidas Institute? What did I do to deserve this, are you mad at me? Is this my punishment for getting an A- on my last report card, or is this a sick joke?
I’ll have you know I’m doing very well here—academically speaking, of course—mentally, however, I think I really will go insane. My roommate takes real pleasure in driving me up the wall; I’m starting to believe he’s unable to shut his big mouth. He’s hyperactive, loud, and enjoys waking up at unnatural times such as five o’clock in the morning. And the staff here? They keep watch over us like we’re children; it’s nerve-wracking.
This school, as you call it, isn’t teaching me anything; I know I’m bright for my age, but I am nearly positive I know more about the topics these teachers are teaching me. The teachers won’t let us leave campus, how am I supposed to get into a top university if I am stuck here until I turn eighteen? If you love me, as you say you do, you would take me away from this place immediately!
—Sincerely, December
